War Veterans Grant Amount 2026

Amount increased from 1 April 2026. Veterans 60 and older receive a slightly higher amount.
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify if you:
- Fought in World War 2 (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950–1953) on behalf of South Africa or the Allied Forces
- Are a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Are 60 years of age or older OR have a disability
- Pass the means test
- Are not already receiving the Older Persons Grant (if you are over 60, the War Veterans Grant pays a slightly higher rate than the Older Persons Grant)
Note: The War Veterans Grant does not cover veterans of the Border Wars, South African Defence Force operations, or post-1994 SANDF service. Those veterans must apply through other programs (the Military Veterans department, not SASSA).

How to Apply
- Visit your nearest SASSA office
- Bring the required documents (see below)
- Applications are processed within 90 days
Documents needed:
- South African ID or valid proof of identity
- Proof of military service during WW2 or the Korean War (service records, discharge papers, medals, or other official documentation)
- Medical report if applying on disability grounds
- Bank account details
War Veterans Grant vs Older Persons Grant
If you are a veteran over 60 and you are not sure which grant to apply for:
- The War Veterans Grant pays R2 210 (R20 more than the Older Persons Grant at R2 190)
- The application process requires proof of service
- If you cannot provide proof of wartime service, apply for the Older Persons Grant instead
