SASSA Status Declined — Reasons and How to Appeal
Last updated: June 2026 · South Africa SRD R370 Grant
Your application was not approved for this month.
A verification check found a reason you do not qualify this month. You have 90 days from the decline date to lodge an appeal.
What Does SASSA Declined Status Mean?
A Declined status means SASSA ran its monthly verification checks and found a flag that makes you ineligible for the SRD R370 grant for that specific month. This does not necessarily mean your application is cancelled — each month is assessed on its own.
Common Reasons for SASSA Decline
- Means test failed — income above R624 per month was detected via SARS or banking data
- UIF registered — you are registered as employed at the UIF
- Government payroll — your ID appears on a government salary payroll
- Other grant received — you are receiving another SASSA grant (e.g. child support, disability)
- NSFAS bursary — you are registered as a NSFAS student receiving accommodation/food funding
- Identity issue — ID number flagged by Home Affairs
- Banking details rejected — the bank account provided is invalid or does not match your ID
How to Appeal a Declined Status
You have 90 days from the date of decline to lodge a reconsideration. Here is how:
- Visit the official DSD appeals website: appeals.dsd.gov.za
- Enter your SA ID number and select the declined month
- Choose a reason for your reconsideration (e.g. "I do not earn income")
- Submit any supporting documents if required
- SASSA will review your appeal — this takes 60–90 days
See the full SASSA appeal guide for detailed steps and tips.
Can My Status Change Next Month?
Yes. A Declined result for one month does not affect future months. If the reason for the decline no longer applies — for example you lost employment — your status can become Approved the following month.
