Who Qualifies for the SRD R370 Grant?
To qualify for the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in 2026, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee with a valid permit
- Aged between 18 and 59 years old
- Monthly income below R624 (the means test threshold)
- Not receiving any other SASSA social grant
- Not registered as a student receiving NSFAS accommodation or food funding
- Not residing in a state-funded care or rehabilitation facility
- Not registered with UIF as an employed person
How to Apply Online — Step by Step
- Go to the official SASSA SRD portal
Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19 on your mobile phone or computer. - Enter your SA ID number
Type your 13-digit South African ID number. - Enter your mobile number
Use the phone number registered on your SIM card. SASSA will send an OTP (one-time PIN) to this number. - Verify with OTP
Enter the OTP sent to your phone to confirm your identity. - Add your banking details
Enter your bank account number. SASSA supports Capitec, Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and PostBank. CashSend is also available. - Submit your application
Review and submit. You will receive an SMS confirmation. SASSA will run verification checks and notify you of the outcome within 30 days.

No physical documents are required for the online application. You only need:
- Your 13-digit SA ID number
- A valid South African mobile phone number
- Your bank account details (account number and bank name)
SASSA verifies your identity electronically with Home Affairs, UIF, and SARS.
After Applying — What Happens Next
After submitting your application, SASSA will run monthly verification checks. You can check your status using the free status check tool on this site.
