How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Grant

Last updated: June 2026 · South Africa SRD R370 Grant

You have 90 days from the decline date to appeal.

A reconsideration request asks SASSA to review your application again. It is free and done entirely online.

Who Can Lodge an Appeal?

You can appeal if your SASSA SRD status shows Declined for any month from April 2022 onwards. The 90-day deadline is counted from the date SASSA declined that specific month — not from when you checked your status.

Step-by-Step: How to Lodge an Appeal

  1. Go to the DSD appeals website
Visit appeals.dsd.gov.za on your phone or computer.
  2. Enter your SA ID number
Type your 13-digit South African ID number and click "Submit".
  3. Select the declined month
A list of months where your application was declined will appear. Select the month you want to appeal.
  4. Choose a reconsideration reason
Select the reason that best describes your situation. Common options include:
    • "I do not receive any income"
    • "I am not employed or registered with UIF"
    • "My banking details were incorrect"
  5. Submit your appeal
Review and submit. You will receive an SMS confirmation. Keep this for your records.

How Long Does an Appeal Take?

SASSA reconsideration appeals typically take 60 to 90 days. You will receive an SMS when a decision is made. You can also check the status of your appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reconsideration.

Appeal Outcome

If your appeal is successful, SASSA will back-pay the declined months. If it is unsuccessful, you will receive a reason and can consider escalating to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

Still Getting Declined Every Month?

If you are repeatedly declined, it usually means one of the verification databases consistently flags an issue. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to ask which check is failing and how to resolve it.
