Who Qualifies?
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee with valid permit
- 60 years or older
- Pass the means test
- Not residing in a state-funded care facility

Assets are also taken into account — the asset threshold for a single person is R1 227 600.
Payment Dates — July 2026
Older Persons Grant payments for July 2026: 2 July 2026
Payments are made on the first working day of each month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or public holiday, payment moves to the next working day.
How to Apply
- Visit your nearest SASSA office — you cannot apply online for the Older Persons Grant
- Bring your SA ID and proof of income
- SASSA processes applications within 90 days
- Payment is backdated to the application date if approved
Documents needed:
- South African ID (green book or smart card)
- Proof of marital status (if applicable)
- Proof of income or pension
- Bank account details (or PostBank card can be issued)
Can a Family Member Apply on Your Behalf?
Yes. If you are unable to visit SASSA in person, a family member or caregiver can apply on your behalf with a letter of authority and their own ID.
Older Persons Grant vs SRD Grant
If you are 60 or older, you do not qualify for the SRD R370 grant. The SRD is for people aged 18–59 only. Apply for the Older Persons Grant instead — it pays significantly more.
