“Means income source identified” is one of the most common decline reasons on SASSA SRD monthly outcome reports. It means SASSA detected a source of income for your ID number that puts you above the R624 monthly means test threshold.

What Does “Means Income Source Identified” Mean?

When SASSA runs its monthly verification, it checks multiple databases for income. If any of these systems shows income linked to your ID number, SASSA flags it as “means_income_source_identified” and declines your application for that month.

This does NOT always mean you are actually earning money. False positives are common.

Common Causes of This Decline

1. Old or Incorrect SARS Record

Your SARS profile may still show income from a previous tax year — even if you have been unemployed for months. SARS records don’t automatically update when you stop working.

2. UIF Registration

If you are still registered as employed at UIF from a previous job, SASSA may treat this as active income. See the UIF registered guide for how to fix this.

3. Bank Account Transactions

A large deposit in your bank account — even from family support, a loan repayment, or a one-time gift — can trigger this flag.

4. NSFAS Payments

If you receive NSFAS accommodation or food allowances, these count as income. See the NSFAS guide for details.

5. Government Payroll Error

In rare cases, a data error places your ID on a government payroll database. This requires manual correction.

How to Dispute “Means Income Source Identified”

Step 1: Lodge an Appeal

  1. Visit appeals.dsd.gov.za
  2. Enter your SA ID and select the declined month
  3. Choose “I do not have income / means test is incorrect” as your reason
  4. Submit the appeal within 90 days of the decline date

Step 2: Gather Supporting Evidence

Prepare documentation that shows you have no income:

Step 3: Fix the Underlying Issue

If the decline is caused by UIF, contact the Department of Employment and Labour on 0800 843 843 to deregister.

If caused by SARS, visit your nearest SARS branch to update your tax status.

Will It Fix Itself?

Sometimes yes — if a SARS record is updated or a UIF deregistration goes through, the next month’s verification will pass. But do not wait passively if you have been declined multiple times. Appeal immediately.
