One of the most common reasons for a SASSA SRD decline is UIF Registered — meaning the Unemployment Insurance Fund database shows you as an employed person. Here is how to understand and fix this.

What Does “UIF Registered” Mean for SASSA?

When SASSA’s monthly verification runs, it checks the UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) database. If your ID number is registered as an employee at UIF, SASSA treats this as evidence of income and declines your SRD application.

The problem is that many people remain on the UIF database long after they stopped working. If your former employer never deregistered you, UIF still shows you as employed — even if you have had no income for months or years.

Why Are You UIF Registered If You Are Not Working?

  1. Former employer never deregistered you — when you left your job, the employer should have updated UIF. Many do not.
  2. Old part-time or casual work — even brief employment years ago may still show on UIF records.
  3. Family member’s record linked to your ID — rare but possible.

How to Check Your UIF Status

  1. Visit uif.labour.gov.za
  2. Log in with your ID number
  3. Check if you are still listed as an active employee

Alternatively, call the Department of Employment and Labour on 0800 843 843.

How to Fix a UIF Decline

Option 1: Contact Your Former Employer

Ask your former employer to formally deregister you from UIF. They can do this online at the UIF employer portal or by contacting the Department of Employment and Labour.

Option 2: Visit a Labour Centre

Take your ID and proof that you are no longer employed (resignation letter, retrenchment notice, or affidavit) to your nearest Department of Employment and Labour office.

Option 3: Appeal the SASSA Decline

While waiting for UIF to be resolved, lodge an appeal:

  1. Go to appeals.dsd.gov.za
  2. Select the declined month
  3. Choose “UIF — I am not currently employed” as your reason
  4. Submit the appeal

See the full appeal guide for step-by-step instructions.

How Long Does the UIF Fix Take?

Updating UIF records can take 4–8 weeks depending on your employer’s cooperation. Once updated, SASSA’s next monthly verification check will pick up the change and your status may change to Approved.

Check Your SASSA Status

After taking action, check your SASSA status monthly to see when the decline reason changes.
