After applying for the SASSA SRD R370 grant, most applicants want to know: how long until I get approved and receive payment?

The short answer: 4 to 8 weeks for most applicants. But it can take longer if there are issues with your details.

Typical Timeline

Stage Timeframe
Application submitted Day 0
Status changes to Pending 1–3 days
Verification begins Week 1–2
Status changes to Approved or Declined Week 3–6
First payment received 7–14 days after approval

Most straightforward applications are resolved within 30 days. Complex cases (mismatched details, database flags) can take 60–90 days.

What Happens During Verification?

After you apply, SASSA checks multiple databases:

  1. Department of Home Affairs — confirms your ID is valid and you are alive
  2. SARS — checks for income records
  3. UIF — checks for employment records
  4. NSFAS — checks for student funding
  5. Government payroll — checks for government employment
  6. Banks — checks for certain account types

If all checks pass, your status moves to Approved. If any check flags income or a problem, it moves to Declined with a reason code.

Why Does It Take So Long?

SASSA processes millions of applications monthly. The verification pipeline runs in batches, not in real-time. Your application enters a queue and is processed when the batch runs for your ID range.

High-traffic periods (new application waves, end of month) cause delays.

When Will I Receive My First Payment After Approval?

Approval in month X typically means payment in the same month or the following month, depending on when in the cycle you were approved:

How to Speed Up the Process

  1. Apply early in the month — applications submitted at the start of the month enter the earliest verification batch
  2. Ensure your phone number is active — SASSA cannot send OTPs if your number is wrong
  3. Use a valid bank account — accounts that don’t match your ID cause delays
  4. Complete e-KYC if prompted — check srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc to see if identity verification is required
