What Is the SASSA PostBank Card?
The SASSA PostBank card is a debit card issued by PostBank (formerly South African Post Office) linked to a PostBank account created in your name. It works like a standard bank card but is designed specifically for SASSA grant recipients.
How to Get a SASSA PostBank Card
- Visit your nearest SASSA office
- Apply for the PostBank payment option when submitting your grant application
- SASSA and PostBank will open an account for you
- Your card is issued and mailed to you or collected at the SASSA office
Note: If you already have a bank account, SASSA will pay into that account instead. The PostBank card is for beneficiaries without existing bank accounts.
Where to Withdraw With Your SASSA Card
You can withdraw your grant at:
- PostBank ATMs — free withdrawals
- Pick n Pay — at the till point (Pay@)
- Shoprite / Checkers / Usave — Money Market counter
- Boxer stores
- Any ATM that accepts Maestro/Visa (fees may apply)
Withdrawal Limits
- Daily ATM withdrawal limit: R1 500
- Daily purchase limit: R3 000
- Free withdrawals: Limited free transactions per month at PostBank ATMs; fees apply at other banks’ ATMs
Your SASSA Card PIN
Your PIN is the 5-digit code set when your card was activated. If you forgot your PIN:
- Visit your nearest PostBank branch or SASSA office
- Bring your ID card
- Request a PIN reset
Do not share your PIN with anyone. SASSA and PostBank will never ask for your PIN.
Lost or Stolen Card
If your card is lost or stolen:
- Call PostBank immediately on 0800 53 54 55 to block the card
- Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID to request a replacement card
- Replacement takes 5–10 working days
Switching from PostBank Card to Bank Account
If you open a bank account (Capitec is popular for SASSA beneficiaries), you can switch your payment channel:
- Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/banking-details-update
- Enter your new bank account details
- Capitec accounts typically receive payment on the 24th–25th — earlier than the PostBank card (26th–28th)
