SASSA Declined — NSFAS Registered: What It Means and How to Appeal
Check your SASSA SRD status instantly — free tool
Check Status Now →If your SASSA SRD monthly outcome shows “nsfas_registered” as the decline reason, SASSA found your ID number in the NSFAS database and treated your NSFAS funding as income above the R624 monthly means test threshold.
Why NSFAS Causes a SASSA Decline
SASSA checks the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) database as part of its monthly means test. If your ID is linked to any active NSFAS funding — including:
- Tuition bursary
- Accommodation allowance
- Food/living allowance
- Transport allowance
SASSA flags this as income and declines your SRD application for that month.
Does NSFAS Actually Count as Income?
It depends on your situation:
| Situation | SASSA Decision |
|---|---|
| Currently receiving NSFAS living allowance | Decline is correct — NSFAS allowances count as income |
| NSFAS funded only tuition (no living allowance) | Decline may be incorrect — tuition is not personal income |
| Previously registered on NSFAS but no longer studying | Decline is incorrect — outdated record |
| Registered but not actually receiving funds | Decline may be incorrect — dispute it |
How to Appeal a NSFAS Decline
Step 1: Check Your NSFAS Status
Log in at myNSFAS.nsfas.org.za to confirm whether you are actively receiving any allowances for the current academic year.
Step 2: Lodge a SASSA Appeal
- Go to appeals.dsd.gov.za
- Enter your ID number and select the declined month
- Choose “I do not have income / means test is incorrect” as the reason
- Explain that your NSFAS registration does not constitute income above R624/month
Step 3: Gather Supporting Documents
- A letter from NSFAS confirming you are not receiving living/food allowances (only tuition)
- Or a letter confirming you are no longer a registered NSFAS beneficiary
- Bank statements showing no NSFAS deposits
If You Are No Longer a Student
If you previously received NSFAS but are no longer studying, NSFAS should have deregistered you. Contact NSFAS directly:
- Call: 08000 NSFAS (08000 67327)
- Email: info@nsfas.org.za
- Request a letter confirming your NSFAS account is closed
Submit this letter with your SASSA appeal.
Can You Receive Both SASSA SRD and NSFAS?
No. NSFAS living allowances are treated as income. If you receive any NSFAS allowance, you do not qualify for the SRD grant. This is by design — both programs aim to support people with no other means, so they are mutually exclusive.
