Identity verification failed is a SASSA SRD decline or block that occurs when SASSA cannot confirm your identity against the Department of Home Affairs records. It is fixable, but you need to take action — it does not resolve on its own.

What Is Identity Verification?

When you apply for the SRD grant, SASSA automatically cross-checks your ID number and personal details against the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) National Population Register. This check confirms:

Common Causes of Identity Verification Failure

1. ID Details Mismatch

The name, surname, or date of birth you entered when applying does not exactly match what DHA has on record. Even a typo (e.g., “Thabo” vs “Thaabo”) can cause a mismatch.

2. Old or Damaged ID Document

If your green ID book is damaged, worn, or has faded details, Home Affairs may have an incomplete record. Smart ID cards are more reliable for verification.

3. ID Flagged or Restricted

Your ID number may be flagged at Home Affairs due to suspected fraud, a duplicate ID issued, or an administrative restriction placed on the record.

4. Refugee or Asylum Seeker Status

If your permit details are not up-to-date in DHA’s systems, or your permit has expired, verification fails.

5. e-KYC Not Completed

SASSA may require you to complete an electronic identity verification (selfie/facial scan). Until you complete it, your application stays blocked.

How to Fix Identity Verification Failure

Option 1: Complete e-KYC Online

Check if e-KYC is required:

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc
  2. Enter your ID number and phone number
  3. Follow the facial verification instructions

See the e-KYC guide for full instructions.

Option 2: Fix Home Affairs Record

If e-KYC is not the issue, visit the Department of Home Affairs with:

Ask them to correct any errors on your record and update your biometric information if needed. Apply for a Smart ID card if you only have the old green ID book.

Option 3: Visit a SASSA Office

Take your ID to a SASSA office and ask for in-person biometric verification. SASSA can verify your identity using fingerprints if the online e-KYC fails.
