Grant in Aid Amount 2026
| Grant | Monthly Amount |
|---|---|
| Grant in Aid | R530 per month |
Amount increased from 1 April 2026.
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify for the Grant in Aid if you:
- Already receive the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant
- Are unable to care for yourself due to physical or mental disability
- Need full-time care from another person for daily activities (bathing, dressing, eating, moving around)
- Have been assessed by a medical professional confirming you need full-time care
The Grant in Aid is paid to the existing grant beneficiary — not to the caregiver. It is meant to help cover the cost of the care they need.
Who Does NOT Qualify?
- People who do not already receive another SASSA grant
- People who live in a state-funded care facility (the State already funds their care)
- Healthy pensioners who simply prefer assistance
How to Apply
- Visit your nearest SASSA office — no online application available
- Bring a medical report from a registered doctor confirming you require full-time care
- SASSA will assess your application
- If approved, the Grant in Aid is added to your existing grant payment
Documents needed:
- Your South African ID
- Medical report confirming need for full-time care (completed by your doctor)
- Your SASSA grant reference number
Grant in Aid vs Care Dependency Grant
These are often confused:
| Grant in Aid | Care Dependency Grant | |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives it | Adult grant beneficiary who needs care | Caregiver of a child who needs care |
| Child involved | No | Yes — child aged 1–18 |
| Amount | R530 | R2 190 |
| Existing grant required | Yes | No |
If you are caring for a disabled child under 18, apply for the Care Dependency Grant instead.
Payment
The Grant in Aid is paid together with your main grant on your existing payment date. If you receive the Older Persons Grant on the 2nd of the month, your Grant in Aid will also be included in that payment.
Medical Review
SASSA may require periodic medical reviews to confirm you still need full-time care. Attend all scheduled reviews to avoid suspension of the Grant in Aid.
