Who Qualifies?
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee with valid permit
- Aged 18–59 years (over 60 = Older Persons Grant)
- Have a disability that makes you unable to support yourself
- Pass the means test
- Not living in a state institution
Means Test 2026
Your annual income must be below:
- Single person: R89 160 per year
- Married couple combined: R178 320 per year
Medical Requirements
You must have a medical assessment confirming your disability. SASSA arranges a free assessment at a designated health facility. The medical assessment determines:
- Whether you have a qualifying disability
- Whether the disability is permanent or temporary
- The grant type (permanent vs temporary disability grant)
Temporary disability grant: Approved for a fixed period (3–12 months) if your condition may improve. You must reassess before it expires.
Permanent disability grant: Ongoing once approved if your condition is permanent.

How to Apply
- Go to your nearest SASSA office
- Bring your SA ID, proof of income, and medical reports
- SASSA will arrange a medical assessment if needed
- Processing takes 90 days
- If approved, payment is backdated to application date
Documents needed:
- SA ID (green book or smart card)
- Proof of residence (utility bill or affidavit)
- Proof of income or declaration of no income
- Medical reports from your doctor (if available)
Disability Grant vs SRD Grant
You cannot receive both the Disability Grant and the SRD R370 grant. The Disability Grant pays significantly more (R2 190 vs R370). If you have a disability, apply for the Disability Grant — it is the more appropriate and higher-paying option.
