Check Status Now →Being declined by SASSA because you are listed as deceased in the Home Affairs database is a serious error — and more common than most people realize. It is not your fault. It is a data error that you need to fix at Home Affairs.
Why Does This Happen?
SASSA verifies every applicant’s identity against the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) National Population Register. If DHA has marked your ID number as deceased — due to:
- A clerical error when processing a death in your family with a similar ID
- Identity fraud where someone used your ID for a fraudulent death registration
- A database corruption or system error
— then SASSA cannot approve your application. They cannot override this; the fix must happen at Home Affairs.
How to Fix a “Deceased” Record
Step 1: Visit the Department of Home Affairs
You must appear in person because the whole point is to prove you are alive. There is no online fix.
- Bring your green ID book or smart ID card
- Bring a recent utility bill or bank statement as proof of address
- Bring any additional ID documents (passport, old ID book if you have one)
Tell the official at the front desk: “I need to correct an incorrect deceased status on my ID number.”
Step 2: Complete the Alive Status Process
Home Affairs has a formal procedure called a “live challenge” or “undoing a death entry.” You will:
- Be fingerprinted
- Have your identity confirmed biometrically
- Complete a declaration form (DHA-24 or similar)
- Be photographed if required
The official will capture the correction on the system.
Step 3: Get Written Confirmation
Ask for a letter or reference number confirming that your deceased status has been corrected. This document can be used when dealing with SASSA.
Step 4: Return to SASSA
Once Home Affairs updates your record (allow 1–2 weeks for the database to sync), either:
- Lodge a SASSA appeal at appeals.dsd.gov.za for the declined month(s), attaching the DHA confirmation letter
- Or re-apply if your application was closed
How Long Does It Take?
- Home Affairs correction: same day at the office, but system updates take 5–14 working days
- SASSA re-verification: 5–10 working days after the DHA system updates
- Appeal resolution: 30–90 days
Can You Appeal at SASSA While Waiting for DHA?
Yes — lodge the appeal immediately and include a note that you have visited Home Affairs to correct the error. Attach the reference number from Home Affairs. This starts the clock on your appeal and may allow SASSA to manually verify once DHA confirms.
Check your SASSA status after the fix to monitor when the decline is resolved.
