If you changed your SIM card or phone number, you must update SASSA immediately — your registered number is used for OTP verification and payment notifications.

How to Change Your SASSA Phone Number Online

  1. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/mobile-number-update
  2. Enter your 13-digit SA ID number
  3. SASSA will send an OTP to your current registered number (the old one)
  4. Enter the OTP to verify your identity
  5. Enter your new phone number
  6. Confirm and submit

Important: You need access to your old number to receive the OTP. If you no longer have access to your old number, you must visit a SASSA office in person.

Cannot Access Old Phone Number?

If you lost your old SIM or phone and cannot receive the OTP:

  1. Visit your nearest SASSA office
  2. Bring your green ID book or smart ID card
  3. Bring proof of your new number (your SIM or a recent prepaid recharge receipt)
  4. Request a manual phone number update from a SASSA consultant

Allow 24–48 hours for the change to take effect across SASSA’s systems. Then:

Common Issues

OTP not arriving on old number: Wait 5 minutes and try again. If still no OTP, your old number may be deactivated — visit a SASSA office.

System showing error after submission: Try again the next day. The SASSA portal can be slow during peak times (first and last week of the month).

Number updated but status still shows old number: Allow 24 hours. If it still shows after 48 hours, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
