What Is the Meaning of “Gov_Payrol_Registered”?
As we all know that SASSA uses the Means test to verify the eligibility of the applicants. During this test, SASSA conducts a universal survey that collects data from different agencies and government authorities. Similarly, when your application status comes as “Gov_Payrol_Registered,” it means that you are working as a government employee and you are getting a salary from the government.
When we read the SASSA eligibility criteria for the SRD grant, we can see that the applicant should not be a government employee to get the SRD grant payment.
Why does SASSA Status come as “Gov_Payrol_Registered”?
There are several reasons for this status. Here is a list of all possible reasons: You are a Government Employee If you work for any government department, SASSA will mark you as “Gov_Payroll_Registered.” Your ID Number is Linked to a Government Payroll Sometimes, old or inactive government jobs still appear in the database. Even if you no longer work there, your data might still show you as employed.
You Worked Under a Short-term Government Project If you worked for a temporary government project or internship, your name may be in the system. You Received a Government Contract Payment If you get paid by a government agency, SASSA may count you as a government worker. Your Name or ID was Wrongly Listed There can be database errors.

How Does SASSA Verify My Employment Status?
SASSA checks your employment status to make sure you qualify for the SRD R370 grant. To do this, they use a system called the Means Test. This test helps them know if you earn money from a job or other sources.
If you earn too much or work for the government, you cannot get the SRD grant. SASSA does not work alone. It gets help from other government departments to check your status.
The two main sources are the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and various government payroll systems. Role of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) SASSA uses your ID number to check your personal information in the DHA database. This helps SASSA make sure your ID is valid and you are a real person living in South Africa.
It also helps to check if someone else is using your ID. Role of Government Payroll Systems SASSA checks different payroll systems where government employees are listed. These payroll systems store salary and job details of workers in: National departments Provincial offices Municipal offices State-owned companies If your ID or name is found in these payroll systems, SASSA will think you are working for the government and getting a monthly salary.
This is when they give you the “Gov_Payrol_Registered” status. They also check data from banks, SARS (South African Revenue Service), and other financial sources. If money is coming into your bank account from a government employer, this is also seen as a sign that you have a job.
So, SASSA uses these tools to decide if you are unemployed or earning money. This process helps keep the SRD grant for people who truly need it.
F.A.Q Can I apply for SRD if I resigned from a government job recently?
Yes, but SASSA may still flag your status; submit proof of resignation with your appeal.
What if someone used my ID to register for a government job?
You should report the identity misuse to DHA and include a police affidavit in your appeal.
Will changing my bank account affect my SRD application?
No, but SASSA will still check your bank for income linked to government sources.
How often does SASSA update payroll checks?
SASSA checks payroll databases monthly during status reviews for each grant cycle.
Can I contact SASSA to manually correct the “Gov_Payrol_Registered” error?
No, you must use the DSD appeal process; SASSA does not handle manual corrections.
