A few days ago, I received an SMS that your ID number has been registered with NSFAS. I became worried because I had not applied for that scholarship. So I immediately visited the SASSA office and met with the SASSA officer.

I told him that I received this SMS saying that your application is registered with us, but I hadn’t applied for this grant. The officer checked the SMS and then checked the SASSA system for more information. He asked me whether I am receiving any grant, and I told him yes, I am a beneficiary of the SASSA SRD grant.

He suggested I visit the NSFAS office and then cancel my registration immediately. So I went to the NSFAS office and told them the whole story. The officer there asked me for my ID number, and I provided it.

He checked his system and found out that my ID is registered at NSFAS. He asked me whether I wanted to cancel it or not. So I was wondering how it could be possible, then the staff educated me that your ID has been stolen and used for this purpose.

Today, I decided to write an awareness guide on how to avoid identity theft for SASSA grants and other social grants. So read this guide completely.

How to Avoid Identity Theft for SASSA Grants?

After my complete research and speaking with some of the SASSA officials, I have concluded 10 points to avoid identity theft in 2025. So let’s start the guide. 1. Keep Your ID Documents Safe Store your ID card, passport, and other documents in a safe place.

Do not share them with anyone you do not trust. Do not hand over your ID card or passport to anyone who is asking for it. Do not send someone else to make a copy of your ID documents at photostat shops. 2.

Do Not Share Your ID Number Easily Only provide your ID number when necessary. Avoid sharing it over phone calls, SMS, or online unless you trust the source. Also, do not send the picture of your ID to anyone via WhatsApp. 3.

Use Secure Platforms for Online Services When accessing SASSA, NSFAS, or other online services, make sure the website is secure. Look for "https" in the URL and avoid using public Wi-Fi. Nowadays, multiple fake websites pretend to be the official websites. 4.

Regularly Check Your SASSA Status Visit our SASSA status check website or your official SASSA website to check your grant status. This helps you catch any unauthorized changes. 5. Register Your Number with SASSA Ensure that SASSA has your correct phone number.

This way, you will receive SMS alerts for any activity related to your account. 6. Be Careful with Social Media Avoid sharing your personal details, like your ID number or SASSA status, on social media. Scammers can use this information.

Do not share the photos of your ID documents online. 7. Report Suspicious SMS or Calls If you receive an SMS or call claiming to be from SASSA or NSFAS, verify it. Contact the official SASSA office to confirm. 8.

Secure Your Email Account Your email can be a target for scammers. Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. 9. Avoid Unofficial Agents Only use official SASSA offices or websites.

Avoid using agents who claim to help you with your grant. 10. Act Fast if You Suspect Identity Theft If you think someone is using your ID number, visit the nearest SASSA or NSFAS office. Report the problem and follow their instructions to secure your account.

How to Check If My ID Is Stolen?

Identity theft is a serious concern, especially if your ID is used without your knowledge. If you suspect your ID has been stolen or used for SASSA grants without your permission, follow these steps: 1. Visit the Nearest SASSA Office Go to your nearest SASSA office during working hours.

Carry your original ID card for verification. 2. Approach the SASSA Information Desk Inform the staff that you are worried about identity theft. Explain that you want to check if your ID is used for any grants. 3.

Visit the Eight Grant Departments SASSA provides eight types of grants: Old Age Pension Disability Grant Child Support Grant Foster Child Grant Care Dependency Grant Grant-in-Aid War Veterans Grant SRD (Social Relief of Distress) Grant Go to each of these departments one by one. 4. Check Your ID in Each Department In each department, ask the officer to check if your ID is registered. Make sure they verify if any grant is active under your name. 5.

Focus on the SRD Department The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) department is often targeted by scammers. Make sure your ID is not registered there without your permission. 6. Report Any Unauthorized Grant If you find any grant registered with your ID that you did not apply for, report it immediately.

Follow the SASSA officer’s instructions to cancel it. 7. Keep a Record Take note of any issues you find and the steps you took. This record may help you in the future.

F.A.Q Can I block my ID number to prevent identity theft?

No, you cannot block your ID, but you can monitor its usage by regularly checking your SASSA status and reporting any suspicious activity.

What should I do if my ID is used for a loan without my permission?

Can SASSA help me if my ID is stolen?
